The brand

Joe Muczka jr. - The Brand

From the pedestrian zone in Heilbronn to a hall of his own at PVA Expo Prague. 30 years of building a brand, in milestones that can be verified.

Josef Muczka was born on 20 February 1971 in Opava, into a family with a long artistic history. At the age of six or seven he climbed through a window into his grandfather's locked studio and carried on painting a half-finished picture. His grandfather caught him and gave him an unusual punishment: anyone who paints over other people's work must first learn how real works of art come into being. Josef drew circles, by his own recollection around a thousand times, and only after half a year was he allowed to paint his first object: An apple. That is how his training began.

When his grandfather died, Josef was about nine years old. His grandfather's friend Václavek took over his training. It was not only about painting, but about understanding art as a link between psychology, ethics and philosophy.

In the field of painting he is self-taught. Josef Muczka has built his life's work himself: on the street, at vernissages, in front of an audience.

The signature style

How to recognise a Muczka

Under the brand Joe Muczka jr., his name stands for an unmistakable visual language of colour, energy and expression. He paints in acrylic because it allows speed, layering and spontaneous response. A work is built up in layers: first come the light tones, then, layer by layer, the darker ones, and finally linear accents and details in opaque white bring the picture forward again.

The works are not framed. The edges finish with a painted border. This is an attitude from street art, in which a frame is regarded as a foreign element. Each work is signed with the monogram «jmj» and the year.

The visual language combines the colour of Expressionism with the fragmented form of Cubism and the clarity of Pop Art. Geometric patterns such as the chessboard appear again and again, reflecting order and strategy. It was not developed on the drawing board, but over three decades in front of an audience.

Because it is so clear, it can be transferred: to a company picture that takes up a company's sector, colours and products, to a vehicle, or to a gold bar of one gram, for which the motif has to be reduced to the absolute minimum.

The start of his career, 1996

No better school than the audience

His professional career began in 1996 in the pedestrian zone in Heilbronn, later in Stuttgart. He painted where people walked past, stopped and gave their opinion. In his life there was no better school than working in front of people, accepting criticism, learning, creating and being able to sell his own art.

In those years he earned his money above all with comics: well-known characters, painted in front of an audience and to order, and over time also specially for companies. There were well over 2'000 of them. Today he himself calls them craftwork. The characters were not his own, and they did not tell his own story. From 2005 he no longer accepted new comic commissions. In his words: «Earning money is nice; telling your own story is more important.»

Demand for his own works grew, and the focus shifted from the street to vernissages and exhibitions. In 1998 came his first vernissage at Seeberger Immobilien in Stuttgart, with over 250 guests. By 2008 there had been around 250 vernissages in Germany; after that the number grew across Europe to over 500.

This period also produced company pictures for Triumph Adler, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and WWK and, from 2003, the film merchandising for Boll KG.

Film merchandising, 2003 to 2006

Boll KG: From film to picture, from picture to a world of products

From 2003 Joe Muczka jr. worked for Boll KG, the film production company of the director Uwe Boll. Boll adapted internationally known computer games for the screen. Two films shaped the collaboration: «Alone in the Dark» with Christian Slater, a film from 2004, and «BloodRayne» with Kristanna Loken, Sir Ben Kingsley and Michelle Rodriguez, prepared in the same year.

His task did not begin with the logo, but with the question: what visual world carries this film? From that he painted original works that translated the characters, atmosphere and game world into his own visual language. The works were photographed and transferred to products: cinema posters and standees, perfume, Zippo lighters, bags, T-shirts, caps, mugs and energy drinks.

For around a year and a half he was almost entirely taken up by the film projects, on many days 13 to 14 hours in the studio. The picture of Sir Ben Kingsley as the vampire king Kagan alone took around three months including the preparatory work. He met the actors in the course of the project, briefly and professionally; the collaboration ran through Uwe Boll and his team. Joe presented Uwe Boll on stage with a large work that brings together several of his film worlds.

For further film projects, «Dungeon Siege» and «Far Cry», preparatory works were still made; the merchandising for them was never carried out. 14 works from the project are recorded in the catalogue of works, the first being «Sir Ben Kingsley as Kagan» from 2003.

Czech & Slovak Photogirl 2017 in Prague

Czech & Slovak Photogirl is a competition for young photo models from the Czech Republic and Slovakia, comparable to a beauty pageant. In 2017 Joe Muczka jr. took part not only as an artist but also held an official role in the competition.

The programme included a body painting recorded for television. The final in Prague was attended by well-known figures from music, film and photography, among them the photographer Jan Saudek and the singer Helena Vondráčková. A work by the artist was also presented that evening. The collaboration led to further events with the competition team. More pictures are in the gallery.

The Czech record for an NFT

In October 2021 the NFT «The Right Direction» was auctioned, based on the original work «Die richtige Richtung» with the hummingbird. The auction ran on Binance. The winning bid was 45'400 US dollars, almost one million Czech crowns. Several Czech media reported a record: the highest price achieved up to then for a Czech NFT.

The buyer received the NFT together with the original work. The winning bid covered both together.

The reports:

NFT stands for «Non-Fungible Token»: a digital token of authenticity for a single, non-interchangeable work.

Portfolio reference

The work «Karel IV. – Otec vlasti» of 2018, acrylic on canvas, 140 × 150 cm, was sold to the Portu Gallery in Prague in March 2021. The purchase contract records it with an asking price of 735'000 CZK excluding VAT, around CHF 28'500.

Five years later, on 18 March 2026, a licensed appraiser in Prague recorded in valuation no. 210-03/2026 an appraised value of 2'940'000 CZK, around CHF 114'300. The asking price of 2021 and the appraised value of 2026 are two different quantities. Yet they speak for themselves: five years after the sale, an independent expert records four times the figure for the same work. The placement is documented in a way that can be followed: work, context and provenance can be clearly attributed.

How he works

In front of an audience, not behind closed doors

Ever since his years in the pedestrian zone, Joe Muczka jr. has painted where people can watch. In live painting a work is created on canvas while the guests enjoy the evening: in palaces and hotels, in an airport terminal, at a car dealership, at trade fairs and balls. As he paints he explains the idea, the technique and how the work takes shape, and at the end there is an original whose moment of birth everyone present has witnessed.

The option

Body painting

On request, the work is created not on canvas but on a person. In body painting Joe Muczka jr. carries his visual language onto a model's body: lines, areas of colour and accents follow movement rather than a frame.

The work exists only for one evening and lives on in the photograph. Over the years a great many body paintings have been created in this way, at vernissages, trade fairs, balls and photo shoots, most of them documented in photographs. The live paintings on canvas can hardly be counted any more.

Live painting is the rule; body painting is the option for events looking for a special moment.

How an event with the artist works is described on the page Corporate art (B2B).

The format

The vernissage

Vernissages are among the most elegant ways of presenting art. They create a setting in which people, brands and values meet naturally. For companies, this brings visibility, reasons to talk and a high-quality setting for relationships and follow-up contacts.

  1. Welcome and laudationThe guests arrive and the host opens the evening. The laudation is given by the host, by someone from the company, or by us together.
  2. Tour and presentationThe works are shown and explained, and the artist is available for conversation.
  3. The live momentLive painting or, on request, body painting, in front of all the guests.
  4. Signing and conversationWorks and prints are signed, and encounters become contacts.

Optional: what can round off the evening

  • Autograph session: The artist signs, on request on specially designed cards with a motif from his work.
  • Prize draw: With limited art prints that the artist reworks into unique pieces, or with original works including a work dossier.
  • Handover of a work: A company picture or a work is unveiled and handed over in front of all the guests.
  • Music and reception: Welcome drink, catering and music, matched to the setting of the venue.

Over 500 vernissages and short-term exhibitions are documented, from a small private circle to a hall of his own at PVA Expo Prague. How such an evening is planned for companies is described on the page Corporate art (B2B).

Where the visual language has been carried

The work does not exist only as an original on the wall. Over the years the visual language has been transferred to other materials and products: as an original, as a motif and as a design language. The following areas show the range of examples we can draw on.

Automotive

Wraps and editions for cars, quads and motorcycles, up to a complete vehicle design. More on this further down.

Interiors and objects

Body Wraps

The visual language can also be worn. The Body Wraps are wrap coats in light fabric, printed with motifs by Joe Muczka jr. Each coat carries a different work, from bright fields of colour to fine line drawing.

They were presented at a vernissage in the Czech Republic, modelled between the originals on the walls. An exhibition becomes a performance, and the work leaves the frame.

An exhibition space of its own across the breadth of the brand: vehicles up to a sports car, furniture and a complete interior, sanitary design, loudspeakers and bottle labels. The range of applications in one minute.

Wrap Style Auto Design

From the work to the vehicle

Motifs by Joe Muczka jr. are on the road on cars, quads and motorcycles: as a wrap, as an edition or as an individual design. For car dealerships this creates visible presence, as a show car, as a special edition or as a feature at an event.

From the sports car to the saloon, at trade fairs in Prague and in front of the dealership: a wrapped vehicle is a work that moves and draws eyes wherever it goes.

A) Motif transfer and wrapping

The starting point is an original work or a vectorised motif. It is adapted to the surfaces of the vehicle: lines, perspective, colour and transitions. Carried out by certified partner workshops.

B) Complete design

On request, a complete vehicle design is created as an independent overall concept, matched to the shape, lines and presence of the vehicle.

Precious metal minting

Motifs by Joe Muczka jr. have been minted in gold and silver. The artist also designed the minting dies for them. For the small formats he had to reduce his visual language to the absolute minimum: on a gold bar of one gram, only the core of a work remains. Each minting has an original work on canvas to go with it. Together they form two groups of works.

Art as a tangible asset

Information, time and money

Anyone who buys an original acquires not just a picture, but a piece of a career and of a name. What matters is to find out beforehand and to follow the artist's path. Three things help here. So does our 12-point checklist, which you can download free of charge: it shows how to recognise a documented work.

Information provides orientation: references, reports, awards, provenance. Time means a lifetime, and it is limited for the artist too. Money raises the question of the difference between notional values and tangible assets: a number on a screen is something other than a work that you can touch, hang on the wall and support with a certificate and an expert appraisal.

An original by Joe Muczka jr. is a tangible asset: a unique piece with a certificate of authenticity, traceable provenance and, on request, an expert appraisal as at a reference date. We give no assurances about future values.

If you could go back 100 years

Imagine you were standing in Barcelona around 100 years ago. A young Pablo Picasso is offering his pictures. Today everyone knows who he was; back then nobody did.

The example does not show what will become of a work. Nobody knows that. It shows something else: in a lifetime a person can create only a certain number of originals. Each of them is unique, and each carries the story of how it came about. With Joe Muczka jr. these are works from 30 years, many of them created in front of an audience and with documented provenance.

From his grandfather. Also on textiles and bed linen, on packaging for coffee, chocolate and wine, on furniture and in interiors, and in film merchandising, from perfume to lighters.

Does JTP sell coins or bars?

No. The precious metal minting shows where the visual language has been carried. JTP Active Invest AG does not trade in precious metals and does not give financial advice.
